Fire Prevention Week 2008 is October 5-11th. Test your fire alarms and have a plan and talk it through with your family. The following story has come from one of the Des Moines area fire chiefs.
This has been a bad year for fire deaths in the State of Iowa. As of September 30, 2008, 36 people in the State of Iowa have died as a result of fire. Most of the fire deaths have occurred in homes. To put this in perspective, last year at this same time there were only 20 fire-related deaths in the State. There were a total of 30 fire-related deaths in all of 2007. We are on pace to set a record.
Most people think a fire will not happen to them or just accept that fires are a part of life. But the reality is that most fires can be prevented. People become complacent and don’t really understand how devastating a fire can be. On a daily basis, fire departments find missing and/or non-functioning smoke detectors in homes. We see kitchen fires that are caused by people not remembering the basics about cooking safety. We see the difference that something as simple as shutting a door can make to help reduce smoke and fire spread. There are so many simple things that can make the difference between surviving a fire or becoming a victim. It all comes down to a simple question - How prepared are you to deal with a fire?
Fire Prevention Week is when the Fire Service really has the spotlight to help people answer this question and give our customers the tools to help live safer lives. But our success is dependent on the support of the community. A lot of people forget that they have ownership in the fire department where they live. Whether it’s staffing, equipment, or fire safety materials, the community is the driving force behind the success and abilities of a fire department. Please encourage your listeners to participate in the Fire Prevention Week activities being sponsored by their local fire department. This is a great chance to meet the dedicated men and women who will answer the call for help 24/7. This is also a great time to get a variety of safety information from the experts in the field.
There are a lot of dedicated fire safety professionals at the local and State level working hard to help reduce the number of fire injuries and deaths. With everything that’s going on in the world right now, it’s easy to not see fire safety as a big priority. But whether you’re at home, work, or on vacation, the risk of fire is there. We don’t want to see any more fire-related deaths this year. Fire safety is everyone’s job! The Fire Service is here to make the job easier! Take some time this coming week and visit your local fire department. We would rather meet our customers in a pro-active setting than the reactive setting when there’s a fire!
